It’s an awkward conversation but we’re all having it
Last post I talked about some of the questions I regularly hear when talking with new clients about my work process. But the newest among them is the AI question: do I use it, how so, and do I mind if they use it.
The subject is a minefield these days.
My current answer is that I don’t much use AI, except for transcription. In that case, I’ve been using it for years. But I do use AI if a client requests it. I’m not opposed. We all see it coming. I have been experimenting with AI myself. We all worry about AI’s reliability. But I know it’s going to be a part of all of our work processes soon. You see? I have lots of thoughts.
Do you use AI?
My most recent conversation with a client focused on how I don’t use AI myself yet except by request. How do I use it in my business? I’ve used it to generate topic ideas for blog posts. I asked ChatGPT to draft blog posts at a client’s request, then edited them to make them sound more human. AI produces generic writing that needs to be punched up and personalized by a human. I am willing to be that human. Am I willing to be paid a lot less than I was in the past? Maybe it won’t be up to me.
But I like writing
To me, writing is not a boring, terrible task. It’s not something that I want to do less. Transcription? No question. But I actually like every part of writing, the ideation, the structure, the figuring out sentences, the editing. Will AI figure out how to do live interviews? I like that part too so it may need to be more new point of focus until AI learns.
When I find out clients use AI, I’m not surprised but I’m a little disappointed. Most of them are also disappointed, in the quality of the product. Which is why they’re sometimes approaching me. Every time I write about this topic, I feel like I’ve learned a little more and yet I’m a little more lost. What’s your experience?
