How to improve your review process

CodeWord blog - blog posts on strategy

You’re excited about a content project with a brilliant subject matter expert. Then it takes days and even weeks to get through approvals and you deflate just a little.

Thereโ€™s a better way. Improve the process and youโ€™ll improve the time span. Hereโ€™s how:

Find out what works best for your reviewer. Ask upfront: “When do you typically have 15-20 minutes of focused time?” Maybe itโ€™s not the 8:00 am that you expect but 20 minutes on a Sunday morning. If you can find a time that works consistently, even better.

The word “review” sounds like homework but the “quick check” sounds like security. Even better when the quick check has a specific goal: “Could you do a quick check to make sure I understood your main point?”

Another option for framing: โ€œYou don’t need to review for style, but please flag anything factually wrong or that misrepresents your position.” This focuses their attention on accuracy and they will make time for that.

Interviewees who claim they’re too busy can become your most engaged collaborators when you work on their terms. They want you to make them sound good and their approval means you can share their words with confidence.

How do you handle the reviewer time challenge?
