Insta quitting and why I’m not

CodeWord blog - laptop - writing tools

Like many, I have a love-hate relationship with social media. As an introvert-in-recovery, I’m shy to share all of my life online. I also find the platforms a bit performative, to put it politely. Yet I also get some good ideas from places like X/Twitter and find it useful to connect with people. I know that it helps my own work life to have a presence in the right places (even if those places are always changing).

Yet the hate side of my love-hate equation perked up the other week when I listened to an episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast with my mentors Kira Hug and Rob Marsh, particularly because their guest Angela Morris focused on Instagram quiet quitting https://lnkd.in/eG_qXGYm , a new service she offers to turn clients’ abandoned Instagram pages into more of a static work of art. After listening to the episode, I went to both Kira’s Instagram https://lnkd.in/e5f7jcbc and Angela’s to check out the model.

Turns out it’s a curated 9-square (or more – Kira chose 15) of posts that stay mostly static and operate more like a website than a social post with interaction. I love the design whereby each of the squares is created to fit together, and the stories behind them advertise a different part of their business and summarize different parts of their professional identities, much like pages on a website.

Yet while Instagram is the platform I struggle with the most, partly because it’s so visual and my focus is words (although I know other writers who do great on there), I’m holding off on the quiet quit. I already have a website to advertise my services there, and even though I’m not the most regular poster, just having the platform there for occasions when needed is useful. One element that I might take, that I already do, is more evergreen squares that share what services I offer to clients and help build an awareness of why I’m on Instagram, to help with my business. Maybe Instagram could offer a service where there’s a more static offer or something to suit those who are only part-time? Until then, Angela’s service is probably a good option.
