Let’s get longtail

CodeWord blog - laptop - writing tools

Inspired by an article that suggested a great way to develop content was to create content based on longtail keywords, I’ve written a few posts in that vein.

But first, what is a longtail keyword? We know keywords are single words that a reader might search to find your website. For example, in my case, I’m hopeful for content or writer or editor. Longtail keywords are the string of words that they might search for, for example, what makes a good writer. Or my fantasy longtail, “writer we want to pay well and treat nicely”.

So, how do you find longtail keywords for your business or organization?

Try searching a phrase that pops to mind for you as a searcher. Today, many alternatives may now appear as questions via Google snippets. Snippets are that list of searches or questions that Google provides on its first search results page where you don’t even need to click through on a link. Notice that these are sourced from a website that you can click through on, no doubt the closest match that the search engine has found on the topic. Could a post I wrote be selected as such? Might be a fun challenge to find out.

Research gets you there too

You can also find longtail keywords through keyword research tools. It’s interesting to research what kinds of information people are looking for specifically, and can be an inspiration for new blog post topics. Or even a new page on your site. For example, if searches are indicating a need for “what resources are available for writers” (or teachers, or electricians) you could create a resources page on your website and become a good source.

So, for my next few posts, I’m going to experiment by answering a couple of longtail keywords that come up in my industry. Want to follow along? Find some in your own niche through the search tactic above and try out your own. Or if you’re a writer, feel free to add any other tips you’d include on the topic in the comments. Let’s gooooo.
